You have probably never heard of Matera, even though it is said to be the third oldest city in the world. Its historical centre, Sassi, is all grey and secretive, built on a rock above magnificent Murgia valley. There are also many caves in the town that are used as workshops by craftsmen and artists. This is where the drawing originates.
During my second stay in southern Italy, I headed to Bari after paying visit to Matera. I sat down on a fountain in the historical city centre and started drawing. Soon, there was a bunch of children and they started babbling, playing with my crayons, and using my precious ink to tattoo themselves (sigh… Italian bambini). Then they kept asking me to draw them a sea with the sunset, a cat, a bear… Some of them wanted to have thefinished drawings I had with me but I said I wanted to sell them. “Va bene, I will buy this one!” “I want that one!” they started screaming and indeed, I sold four drawings to them.
The point is different though. There was a long-haired man sitting nearby. He asked me if he could see my “portfolio” and explained he was a professor of art at university. Fancy that! He liked the drawings but most of all, Rainbow in Matera :-)
